    ii) [Harry’s hope of marrying An/na] ↑was impractical. <--- 其實並非 garden path， 因為Harry（男），可以直接用marry

 

一些記號

• Adj + 表adj可以多於一個
• X* = (X+)  可以多於一個
• * Love I John 星號打前面表不合語法

語言學變得比較接近「描述和分類」的科學(taxonomy)，多用在語料庫或神經語言學，而且也和語意脫節、抽象、獨立開來了。（因為S-> TP, 關於tense的研究造成句子的中心語變成tense而非verb）。不知道未來有沒有機會再度和其他的科學合流或應用開來。

如果是作processing,則是psycho-linguistics。除非需要用這種心理學方式作驗證，不然一般的syntax還是比較偏好使用語法內部的邏輯來驗證。

• 及物: devour
• 不及物: sympathize (+with)

子句篇:

Clauses don’t always stand on their own  embedded inside another,  Often introduced by a complementizer (that or if)

講到cp, np, AdvP的限制

In verbs that allow both an NP and a CP, the CP follows the NP but precedes the PP (the position of the second NP)
There is no way to draw the tree for sentences where an AdvP can appear before the CP
We don’t want to add an optional AdvP before the ({CP/NP}) in the rule because AdvPs cannot appear before the NP

Relative Clauses 跟CP的關係，會在Ch12 再深入說到。Relative clause其實就是一個形容詞，他是一個adjunt的性質

Eg. The man who(m) you saw yesterday.

至於that 子句，很多時候是當成論元(argument)的性質

Eg. The man that you saw yesterday 雖然跟上句可以互換，但其實細部性質並不同。

 

去Ch3 的1.6 & 1.7的conjunction rule那邊仔細看看所有範例，有沒有問題。下面這兩種規則算是最大範圍的最好寫法。利用X這個概念已經涵蓋了幾乎已知的所有情況。

1. XP –> XP conj XP
2. X –> X conj X

遞迴寫法

1. XP –> X YP
2. YP -> Y (XP)

範例：

2. PP –> P NP

ZP –> Z PP

PP –> P ZP

Morphology 和 SYnatx在各種語言的屬性中是互補的關係。一強則另一個通常會比較弱
