THIS is a place holder post in progress. It's here as a public draft intentionally. No company secrets will be here, only conceptual explanation on how to create engagement in practice

(As I rewrote this article a month later, I update the definition and terms being used to categorize channels and their info types )

  1. linking a public view stream cam in slack pinned info
  2. Place request portal for certain teams
  3. Classified public channels into type groups. (details to be shown in company confluence)

Changing scene for center of town. A anchor where they know where to gather, and where to monitor the river that bring new info through their town. Flowing water means prosperity and refresh. It also create a space where people can have enough space to consider what to absorb before acting.

As hybrid work becoming mainstream, the focus is how to maintain closer engagement while not in being the same physical space for a long time. Just having online meetings regularly is not enough because different online media are competing for our finite resources - attention and time.

There are less resources being used to read and analyzed raw data, therefore creating silo effect more serious than ever.

Watch the picked channels with infinite treasures from changing office scenes. Update the list of public slack channels. First categorize by type (participants/popularity), and then by functions.

Type of public channels in a company.

Type A
(A1, A2)
A1 < 90 participants, functional team, help desk

A2 bot messages like PR or jira status changed
Unmanaged A2 will become a garbage dump. Do not post please review there.

Type B
(B1, B2)
B1 Without channel manager, used to be a team channel
>= 100

Examples:
  • #[company name]-all

B2 Questionaries (アンケート)
Generally all sorts of survey.

Examples:
  • #tmp-
B3 inactive projects

Type C
C1 Personal Work dump
Generally smaller than 20 people.

#zp-names

C2. Clubs with specific interests
Mountain climbing, cooking, language learning, etc.

According to my initial investigations, Type A has longest life span because it provide info pinned atop, and some of the questions answered are stored and retrievable for all new comers. They can search detail in jira or system with more advanced system, not just try the luck and root the phrases around in random slack channels.

The cam list that helps create chill environment and engagement online. I hope each team can pick one of their fav live cam so they share a view together like walking the dog together by river bank while the sunset. The ambience view and sound is my brain lo-fi when I work with multiple monitors at home.
